Post 3: Reply to Another Classmate
Review the visual display that they found and discussed. Did you notice anything that they did not mention? What are two or three things that you will keep in mind when viewing visual displays from now on?

There are many articles, graphs, pie charts etc. that depict the problem of depression. Unfortunately, those will never be a direct representation of the true pandemic that we know as depression. There will always be people who “fight through it.” They will put on a happy face and pretend everything is okay, they will self-medicate, or they will just let it eat them away. This stems from the fear of being labeled as weak or not competent enough to handle a job or whatever reason society has as a label for any given day.
I do feel this graph is misleading, and mostly for the reasons mentioned above. It’s just as good as any other graph because it’s from a trusted source and was developed based on research and data provided. The problem with the data provided is that it’s never complete with a topic such as depression. It’s still not socially acceptable for people to openly seek help for depression, especially with men. There are studies that lay out more in-depth studies, but that’s a whole other topic for another day.
I personally wouldn’t have designed this graph any different. No matter what other studies have shown, or opinions are shared, in the end a graph should be based on facts from data presented. This graph is solid in that aspect.
The graph I chose came from the national institute of mental health, which is a .gov website. Because of this it’s a direct representation of studies conducted by very intelligent and educated individuals. This is another reason why this graph isn’t misleading. It’s meant to show the facts that come from years of work and data collection.
Basically, the only problem I have with my selection has already been mentioned. It only shows those who have come forward for help, As a psychology major and as an adult who has worked with people from all different walks of life, I know that there’s a tremendous amount of people who don’t seek out the help they truly need. Until then, there will never be a graph that completely depicts the entire population of those who struggle with depression.
