************MY POST***************

Hirohito was the Japanese emperor from 1926 to 1989. He took over power at an early age when japan was rising democratic sentiments. He later turned japan into an ultra-nationalism and militarism. During World War II, led japan to the war, attacking the USA military base in Pearl Harbor. During this time, he launched a surprise attack on the Americans, killing more than 2000 soldiers, which sparked a war with the Americans (Byng 2017).

Hirohito was the then emperor in 1939, but this was marred with the rise of militarism and a series of political assassinations. Hirohito escaped assassination because of the naval officers who wanted to get rid of him by then. Hirohito was so controversial since he was so unique that he married a familiar something that was a taboo that had lasted 150000 years before he broke. In 1929 he fired the prime minister to make himself the only leader in japan. During this period, Japan’s conflict was growing. The Japanese detonated the railway explosion and blamed the Chinese; Manchurian, I think this was the onset of the Chinese –Japanese rivalry.

Japan signed a pact with Germany and the USA, which saw the Japanese attack the Americans. The Americans responded with economic sanctions to Japan. This move made Japan further their attacks by attacking Pearl Harbor, where the USA naval were based; In return, the USA sent an atomic bomb to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing adverse effects to the Japanese. This effect made Hirohito surrender on Public radio. All these Wars was as a result of Japan’s intention to become a superpower in the Asian land more so the entire world to counter America.

Japan was not on the right terms with China due to these supremacy wrangles; hence, she decided to sort support from the other superpowers. The Japanese wan tented to expand to Southeast Asia, something that the American government objected to; thus, the American government demanded the Japanese move from Indonesia. The Japanese refused this idea hence causing a revolt; this was the onset of World War II. After World War II, China started gaining supremacy among the Asian countries; this made her develop a cold war with her neighbors and the rest of the world. This war is being experiences up the current moments where China is trying to become an economic superpower.

For instance, Beijing claims almost all the South China Sea; it is referred to as the nine-dash line. The sea is fast becoming “the most contested body of water in the world,” the main field for geographical and political competitions between a steadily upcoming China and the US that, Kaplan contends, is in relative if it was not necessarily absolute decline(Kaplan pp.23). China’s actions are inevitable since its emergence as a world economic superpower is overwhelming; I think shortly, china will outshine the USA in several aspects of life, ranging from military to economic spheres.

According to Michael Pillsbury: The Hundred-Year Marathon, China come up with the “China world order 2049,” which views a world that shaped America’s image as the world’s only superpower(Pillsbury pp. 177-178 ), but chain a is working to delete this notion and deprive America its world status. In other words, China is purposely forming collaborations with other nations to chip away from Americans’ power. China will achieve this by definitely through financial aids to other countries, especially the Aid in Taliban (Pillsbury pp.182-185)

I think it is incredible how time and again we see how decisions are made not for moral reasons, but for political gain. General Douglas MacArthur opposed the trial of Hirohito as a war criminal, solely because he wanted it to appear as though Hirohito was cooperating with the Allied powers who were occupying Japan. MacArthur thought it would show stability if Hirohito remained in his position. In the eyes of the U.S., Hirohito would be more useful on the throne. At this point, Hirohito changed his entire image. He went from being portrayed as a living god, a divine creature walking among men, to the perfect image of a middle class, common citizen. The documentary mentioned that he began to dress in badly tailored suits. He even made visits to the United States and Disneyland later in his life, alongside his wife.

Two things specifically were brought to mind in regard to these points. One is how the United States did not press charges against the Japanese war criminals who were involved in Unit 731, solely because the United States wanted access to the horrifying research results that were acquired there. Once again, political gain over moral compass. In terms of Hirohito’s image change, I immediately think of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is often photographed or taped with disheveled hair and clothes that make him appear as “one of the people.”

Hirohito was the emperor of Japan just prior to World War II, during the war and following it. He has been a controversial figure since assuming power as the Imperial Army made strategic decisions without his permission or consent. In order to regain their influence, the military initiated imperialistic campaigns against the Chinese in Manchuria, conquering it and turning it into a vassal state of the Japanese empire. Additionally, the Japanese army captured cities in southern China and throughout the eastern region. These campaigns proved the military prowess of Japan and further inspired them to pursue their expansionist ambitions. Conservative movements back home in Japan supported these causes, including cabals within the military who staged a coup of sorts meant to purge older statesmen and industrialists who were considered regressive. After the war, Hirohito had been exonerated from all war crimes and has been viewed as a pawn of Tojo and the other military leaders. However, I read a biography of Hirohito called “Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan” by Herbert P. Bix which painted Hirohito in a different light using the journals and diaries of his advisors and other statesmen, along with memos and government documents, as evidence of his support and instigation of militarism. If I remember correctly, the biography by Bix did mention how he was unaware of the incursion into Manchuria, however it described how he supported and promoted all other military action prior to WWII and during it. Honestly, I believe he was directly involved in the war based off of the excerpts from the journals and memos that the biography I read included as evidence of his militarism. I believe General Douglas MacArthur shielded the emperor from criticism and denunciation to prevent unprecedented shame to overtake the country. Following Japan’s surrender, many Japanese committed suicide out of shame. Many more would have done so if the Emperor, who had a powerful cult of personality, had been removed and executed along with the other war criminals.
