Write a 5-6 page contextual analysis of ONE of the images from the Walters Art Museum listed below, which analyzes each work of art as typical of their respective time periods.
Your paper should include a brief (approximately one paragraph) formal analysis of your work of art and should especially consider the historic context in which the work was created. [For a reminder of how to conduct a formal analysis, see here: Formal Analysis] You will be graded on your ability to describe the various historical and social forces at work at the time the object was created and to suggest the ways in which style affects the message encoded in the work of art.
“A” papers will answer the question(s) posed with a clearly articulated thesis statement – an assertion your paper will prove.
This assignment will require research: at least four sources outside of your textbook are required. Papers are due on Sunday, December 6, by 11:59 pm. Late papers will be marked down 5 points for every day late. No late papers will be accepted after December 11 at 11:59 pm.
Paolo Veronese, Portrait of Countess Livia da Porto Thiene and her Daughter Deidamia. Renaissance, 1552, oil on canvas, Location: Third Floor: 16th Italian Art; Late Renaissance Style
Prompt: Who is depicted here, and how is her identity constructed (conveyed)? What values and ideals does the work suggest she had? How does her image relate to the role of women in the Renaissance? You might note that there is a pendant portrait of her husband that was also created. Without spending too much time on the portrait of her husband, you might consider the marital message the works conveyed together. How does the Renaissance style enhance this propaganda?
At least four sources in addition to your textbook are required for this assignment. You are not required to use your textbook, but if you do, it doesn’t count as one of your four sources.
All resources must be cited with properly formatted footnotes, along with a complete bibliography, in order to avoid plagiarism.
Please note that footnotes and bibliography must follow the Chicago Manual of Style format – the standard art historical citation format. I’ll explain this and provide resources in upcoming pages.
Parenthetical notations [i.e., (Smith, 279)] will not be accepted for this assignment. Papers submitted using parenthetical notations instead of footnotes will be subject to a ten point deduction.
Papers submitted without footnotes or bibliography will be subject to a minimum of five point deduction for each omission.
Papers that rely heavily on one single source will be marked down at least 10 points for under-research.
Only websites approved of by me will be permitted as research sources.
Article databases like JSTOR are acceptable.
Most other websites will be denied. This is about using scholarly research published in books and journals.
Email me if you’d like a different source approved.
Papers which cite non-approved websites as sources will be subject to a five point deduction for EACH offense.
You may use Oxford Art Online and the Walters Museum website as sources but they will NOT count as part of your four required sources.
Papers that use uncited material as their own will earn a zero and be reported to the university for plagiarism.
Remember, whenever you directly quote, paraphrase or use the ideas of another, you must cite your source properly. Otherwise, it’s considered plagiarism. When in doubt, cite it. I’ll provide references for this in upcoming pages.
