ANTH 81a Short Assignment #5 Mapping exercise and reflection.
1 page (double-spaced) + map
Create a map with at least two layers with ArcGISonline. Your map may be related to your project but does not have to be. It should display two variables (types of information) In relation to each other and in relation to geographic space, for example (such as the relationship between median household income (1st layer) and polling places (2nd layer) in Chicago (base map/geographic space).
You may have to browse through different layers to find two that relate together in a way that is potentially meaningful. You can add data from your own research by creating a CSV file or (much easier) creating a “Map notes” layer and inputting the data manually.
For technical support in creating the map, see the Echo360 lecture from 10/27, the handout in “PowerPoints and Materials Used in Class” and the video tutorials in “Resources for Online/Digital Ethnography” REMEMBER TO SAVE OFTEN AS YOU WORK
Make sure to give your map a title that reflects what you think it shows.
Along with the map, submit a one-page essay explaining. The essay should cover the following:
1. what is the map telling us about the relationship between these types of information?
2. Where do the data come from (not just ArcGIS but the specific source), how were the data collected and how reliable do you think they are?
3. If the map is related to your project, how is it related?
4. What further questions might be asked about what the map is telling us? What methods would we need to use to answer those questions?
This assignment is worth 8% of your course grade and is graded on a scale of 100
