Out of the three main roles of HR, I have the most experience with Operational. Operational includes recruiting and onboarding, handling employee complaints and leave requests, organizing training programs, counseling, coaching, etc. (Shpak, n.d.). I coach and providing training to nine individuals. I also handle customer and employee complaints and help create the schedule. I love all aspects of my job, but the most challenging part is coaching and counseling. Coaching and counseling is not a one size fit all approach. Everyone is different; therefore, in order to be effective, you must know your people and know your stuff.
Second to Operations, I have some experience in Admin HR. Admin HR encompasses employee relations, benefits planning and admin, hiring and selection, risk management, pay, and technology (Shpak, n.d.). I am a part of the leadership team, so we decide who to hire and terminate and what technology to use. As a supervisor, I have to maintain a professional but friendly relationship with my colleagues and other staff members. However, I do not take part in benefits planning, pay, nor risk management. The most challenging part about this role is forming and maintaining relationships. Under normal circumstances, this would not be difficult, but due to COVID everything has moved from in the office to remote, making it more challenging to connect and stay connected.
I don’t have much experience in Strategic HR. Strategic HR ‘“covers the concepts and practices that guide and align Human Resource Management philosophy, tactical planning and practice with the strategic and long term goals of an organization…it deals with concerns regarding structure, quality, culture, values, commitment, and matching resources to future needs and other longer-term people issues” (Balance Point Team, 2017). From what I have learned and seen, company culture is hard to change, so I do believe that this would be the most difficult aspect of my job.
