Format for the Final Draft: (1) Hook/opening sentence, (2) introduction to the exhibition, (3) body of your argument about what the works are trying to achieve, and (4) a conclusion about how successful you think the exhibition was and why. – 20 points
By the end of the session, all students will be responsible for producing a 750-2000 word review of an art exhibition. Students may choose to write on an exhibition that features a single artist or artwork, or on group exhibition with many works. It is preferable that the student can see the exhibition in person, but if no exhibitions are in their geography area, or they cannot travel for other reasons, they may review an exhibition that is online, where all the materials in the exhibition are available or can be made to be available to the student through the exhibiting venue.
Attention to critical models covered throughout the course will be a central component of the assignment, and the final exhibition review should incorporate key terms and ideas from the coursework. The assignment is left open deliberately to allow students to further investigate discoveries made during the class, or to provide a platform for students to pursue interests and push further into themes and questions that feature prominently within the trajectory of their chosen course of study.
Many different exercises and research assignments will build from week to week so that each student has a wealth of material and insights to draw from before writing the final paper.
The goals of the final exhibition review are to:
Identifying an exhibition where you have access to seeing the works and supporting materials.
Identifying works of art, artists, art movements, and other textual sources that might provide a starting point for the paper through research
Collecting quotes, background information, information on the artists, etc., that will enrich and support the points being made in the final exhibition review.
Making sure that the review has (1) an introductory paragraph, (2) a series of body paragraphs that makes an argument about the value of the works in the *exhibition, (3) a summary of those points in conclusion. * Not every work in the exhibition must be reviewed, only the number of works that support the argument of put forth in the paper about the value of the exhibit and the works in it.
The final paper should make a claim about the exhibition, ultimately following a thread to arrive at an intriguing conclusion.
