An individual suffering from many different forms of mental health disorders are fifty percent more likely to also suffer from a substance abuse disorder. One in four people end up succumbing to substance abuse due to childhood traumas, anxiety disorders, and other psychotic conditions. Whether diagnosis of the mental health condition or receiving treatment for abusing drugs happens first, the good news is that beginning to address either will help with the improvement of both. It is proven that the chances of developing one of these conditions without the presence of the other is extremely low. In 2017 it was said the 74% of adults suffered from drug and alcohol abuse nationwide. So it is fairly easy to see that these kind of circumstances are very common, and early awareness can hopefully lead an individual to seek help at the early symptoms of a condition.

Here is all the rest of the instructions he has listed on the assignment. AT LEAST 1000 WORDS, 3 CITATION REFERENCES, AND ALL THE INDIVIDUAL REQUIRED PAGES HIGHLIGHTED IN YELLOW. ALL BASED ON THE TOPIC ABOVE.

The major assignment in this unit is to compose an APA style essay with a specific focus toward establishing context, causes, effects, and evaluations of the research topic. APA style has many required sections and parts. Very few students are ever asked to use APA style before attending college, but many of the most popular college degrees are in academic fields which require it. Pay very close attention to the instructions in this Blackboard unit and expect to be asked to use APA style frequently in college courses.

An APA research paper is typically divided into several distinct sections, but not all APA essays will use each section. Writers choose which sections are relevant for their research or topic.

The Title Page and Abstract are the first two pages of an APA essay. Even though they come first in the finished product, they are typically the last to be completed. The Abstract will be labeled in boldface font and centered in the APA essay.

The introduction is not labeled in an APA essay, but it will immediately follow the full title and begin on the third page. We will cover introduction writing in Unit 3 lesson 11.

I am creating screen capture walk videos demonstrating how to produce essays using our course materials and Microsoft Office 365 software available to students. I am temporarily posting them to a private Youtube channel. If you follow this specific link, you should be able to watch the video. Each video will have a separate link, and I will create as many as I can this way until I learn how to do it more permanently. I will also include a typed transcript of each video.

Literature Review

APA Introduction and Literature Review transcript.docx (13.094 KB)

The Literature Review is a survey of the writer’s survey of the field of available research previously done on the topic. In traditional research essays, the Literature Review essentially organizes the book research the author has done into the topics and issues that will be covered in the paper, summarizes what is already known or understood on the topic, and then points out where new study is still needed. The basic idea is that the author then conducts a study to fill in those weaknesses and contributes to the overall understanding.

The Literature Review in our College Writing class will be a simplified version, but it is a required part of the APA essay. The Literature Review in our class will contain a short paragraph for each source. This paragraph was completed in the Close Reading Document assignments in lessons 7-9, so simply copy those parts into the APA document after the introduction.

In the APA essay, the term Literature Review will appear bold and centered in the document.

Methods and Results

Methods (also sometimes called Methodology) and Results are sections which are labeled in boldface font and centered in the APA essay. In research papers, these are the sections where the writer presents original methods of research (interviews/data gathering/experiments/evidence collected) and presents the results or findings of that original research. The Methods and Results sections are not part of the APA essay in this course, but students should be familiar with this as part of a traditional APA style research report.

Discussion and Conclusion

Discussion and Conclusion are sections labeled in boldface font and centered in the APA essay. They are required parts of the APA essay. In these sections, a writer discusses how the experiment they conducted in the Methods and Results sections adds to the body of work described in the Literature Review. Basically, this is where the author talks about how their research fits into the overall body of work in a field. For our College Writing class, these sections are where the “essay” is written. Most of what students think of as being an essay (body paragraphs, citations, topic sentences, transitions) take place in these two sections.

Acknowledgements References Appendix

Acknowledgments are where the writer/researcher thanks the supporting staff or participants in the study that is detailed in the Methods and Results sections. As such, this will not be a part of the essay we write in this College Writing class.

References section is labeled in boldface font and centered in the APA essay. It is a required part of the APA essay and contains the bibliographic entries for the sources cited in the essay

Appendix section is labeled in boldface font and centered in the APA essay. It is not a required part of our assignment, but if a student uses graphs, charts, images, or other visual aids in the essay, they appear here. In APA essays, the visual aids are not placed inside the essay itself. Each image, chart, or graph gets its very own page (1 per page) in a section called Appendix. Then, when you reference that visual aid in the APA essay, it is cited with a reference to the Appendix (see Appendix p. 6, for example).
