Writing Assignment Instructions
Review the Module 6 readings on violent, property, and political crimes. Each crime typology/category discussed in the Module 6 readings includes specific types of crimes. For example, violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery, and hate crimes. Political crimes include espionage, treason, and terrorism. Property crimes include various forms of theft, as well as burglary and arson.
Locate one recent news article (no older than 5 years) from a reliable news source (not Wikipedia, personal blogs, or other unreliable sources) that illustrates one of the specific types of crime mentioned in the Module 6 readings. Do not select a broad crime typology (violent, property, political)—select a news article illustrating a specific crime included in one of these categories.
Note that you need to locate a news article that is detailed enough for you to thoroughly address the following assignment elements. Consider that you may be able to get more information on high-profile crimes falling under the crime typologies covered in this Module (violent, property, political).
For a guide on reliable sources, see the “Evaluating Information: The CRAAP Test” section located in Module 1 of our Canvas course.
Writing Assignment Format

Construct a 5-paragraph essay in APA format (use the attached fillable APA Template) that addresses the following requirements in the order specified below:

Cover page in APA format

Introductory paragraph: Provide an overview of the crime typology your selected crime falls under, and a definition of the type of crime you selected in your own words (still properly cite your textbook). In this introduction, be sure to include current data (numbers, statistics, etc., no older than 2012) indicating the extent of your selected crimes in the United States.

2nd paragraph: Provide an overview of how the specific crime you selected is illustrated in the recent news article you located. Be sure to provide in-text citations and references for all sources (textbook, news article, etc.).

For example, you may locate a news article about auto theft, which is a property crime. You would then provide a definition of auto theft in your own words (including all important elements in your definition), and briefly discuss the property crime typology. You would then provide data on the extent of this crime in the U.S. using the UCR and other reliable sources.

Good sources for data on the extent of your selected crimes in the U.S. include the FBI’s UCR website(s), which students explored earlier in this course, as well as the textbook and other resources.
Be sure to provide in-text citations and references for all sources (textbook, UCR, news article, etc.).

3rd paragraph: Discuss how two of the concepts discussed in the text relevant to the crime you selected are illustrated in the news article you located.

For example, if you selected rape and located a news article on crime, you might discuss the type of rape illustrated in the article, the variety of rape illustrated in the article (power, anger, or sadistic), and/or the cause(s) of rape and how one or more of these causes is illustrated in your article. All of these concepts are discussed in the Module 6 readings on interpersonal violence.
Be sure to provide in-text citations and references for all sources (textbook, news articles, etc.).

4th paragraph: Identify ONE potential program/law/policy that has been put in place to address your selected crime, and how this policy/law/program has been or could be used to address the specific crime(s) discussed in your identified news article.

You may discuss situational crime prevention, mandatory minimums, counseling, government programs, specific laws (hate crime laws), etc. The policy implications you discuss here should be relevant to your selected crime(s).
Be sure to provide in-text citations and references for all sources (textbook, news articles, etc.).

5th paragraph: Given the extent of your selected crime(s) in the U.S. (based upon current data you retrieved for this assignment), and the nature of current public policy with respect to these crimes, what do you see as the future of these crimes in the U.S.?

Do you see your selected crime(s) increasing or decreasing? Why? Provide evidence including data and facts from your textbook and other reliable sources to support your discussion.
Do you see any gaps in public policy with respect to these crime(s)? If so, what are the gaps and how might you recommend those policy gaps be filled?
Be sure to provide in-text citations and references for all sources (textbook, UCR, news articles, etc.).
Writing Assignment Technical Aspects
Write in a clear, concise, and organized manner. This is an academic paper so do not include personal pronouns (I, me, we, etc.) or subjective language.

You should, at a minimum, cite your textbook and the news articles you researched for your case study as you are discussing information from these sources in your paper. Download the APA Word Template (attached) and personalize it for this assignment. Your paper should be double-spaced in Times New Roman 12-point font and with 1-inch margins all the way around. Be sure to write in your own words as much as possible. Avoid using direct quotes (write in your own words), and properly cite your textbook (for the concepts), as well as any other sources you use.

A sample citation for the UCR looks as follows: (U.S. Department of Justice, 2010)

A sample reference for data tables created using the UCR data tool looks as follows:United States Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation. (2010). Crime reported by Jacksonville, Florida 1985-2012 [UCR Data Tool]. Retrieved from http://www.ucrdatatool.gov/Search/Crime/Local/RunCrimeJurisbyJuris.cfm

A sample reference for official UCR reports (such as the Crime in the U.S. Report) looks as follows:United States Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation. (2015). Crime in the United States, 2015. Retrieved from https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2014/crime-in-the-u.s.-2014/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement/violent-crime

See Module 1: Course Introduction: APA and You for examples of in-text citations and references for your textbook. You should have in-text citations in every paragraph of your paper to align with the materials, concept(s), and definitions you discuss, even though your discussion was in your own words. As you are discussing materials from other sources, even though you are discussing these materials in your own words you must still properly cite sources with in-text citations and references in APA format.

Any paper that is more than 30% similar to other sources in paper content as reported by Turnitin will receive a zero.
