Choosing a Topic

The topic you choose for your researched paper should be about a problem that exists in the field you plan to go into. For example, educators may want to research the problem of discipline, vet tech students may want to know more about dealing with difficult humans, and health care workers may need to review confidentiality issues, and so forth.

If you are not sure about what problems exist in your field, you should begin reading journals or industry publications or web sites, ask the library staff at Gaston College to assist you in finding relevant publications to your field, or approach professors or people you know who work in the field for their ideas about current problems/issues/debates.

If you are not sure what field you will go into, you can choose a topic that is relevant to your life as a student, or perhaps as a parent (or in another social role). For instance, as a college student, you could investigate the problem of rising tuition costs for college students; or, as a parent, you could look at the high demand for charter schools or unhealthy school lunch menus.

The Written Portion

Every person in this class will have a slightly different approach to his or her paper, but this is how your final researched paper should be organized:

Introduction.

Start with a thorough introduction to your paper.

Part I.

Write a thorough and complete explanation of your topic as a problem.

Define the problem.
Consider showing cause and effect.
Give as many different perspectives on your topic as you can. Be fair to positions you don’t agree with.

Part II.

Explore what should be done about the problem that is your topic.

Examine at least three different views of what should be done to solve the problem you describe in the first part of your paper.
Discuss the merits and drawbacks of each of the solutions you present.
Make your own argument for what you think the best solution to the problem would be.

End with a thorough conclusion to your paper.

Technical Requirements for the Written Portion:

1. Your paper should be at least 5 pages long.

2. Although you will find many potential sources, you must use at least four academic-caliber

research sources, and two of those must be database sources from the Gaston College databases.

3. Your paper must be correctly documented both in APA style in the text and in a references

page, which will be on its own page at the end of the paper.

4. Follow the conventions of standard English grammar and mechanics, and edit carefully.

5. Use good transitions between your paragraphs.

6. Format your paper in a way that is appropriate for your field. This semester, we will have

seen many examples of formatting for professional writing. You will decide a format that is appropriate for your topic and audience. Use the sample reports in your textbooks to guide your choices.
