Introduction: Answer the following 5 questions.

Write a brief synopsis of the research presented here. (Hint: The abstract may be useful in helping you synthesize what you have read.)
Create an APA citation for this study.
How do the authors conceptually define the construct of stereotype threat? How do they think arousal is related to stereotype threat?
What stereotypes have you encountered in your educational experiences? Do you feel you have been affected by these stereotypes in any way?
What gaps in the literature does this research fill? (i.e., How does this study build or improve on previous research?). Discuss some previous research on the topic.

Method: Answer the following 6 questions.

What are the independent and dependent variables of interest? What do the authors hypothesize?
Can the following study establish cause and effect? Discuss temporal precedence, covariation of cause and effect, and elimination of alternative explanations.
What type of sampling do you think was used?
Was their sample representative of the population? How do you know?
How did they operationalize the independent and dependent variables?
Why do you think the researchers counterbalanced the ordering of the easy, difficult, and very simple math tests? (Hint: counterbalancing is when tests are administered in different orders to different people).

Results: Answer the following 4 questions.

How did women perform on the easy test? The hard test? How is their performance explained?
How did men perform on the different tests? How did men perform compared to women?
The researchers propose a few alternative explanations for women’s scores on the easy and hard math tests. What variable/s do they think might have an effect on these scores? Do they find evidence supporting or refuting this alternative explanation?
Why did the researchers examine differences in the motivation men and women had prior to taking the tests?

Discussion: Answer the following 5 questions.

Is this research an example of basic or applied research, or some combination? Explain why.
Why do you think arousal affected performance but not effort? Do you believe these results?
In your opinion, can stereotype threat be a good thing? Would you ever expose individuals to stereotype threat in order to boost their performance on certain tasks? Could you justify this ethically?
The researchers found pretty strong results for a manipulation that was as simple as saying “This test has been known to show gender differences.” Do you think these results would be long-lasting? Do you think the results generalize to other scenarios?
What changes would you recommend to university professors to prevent stereotype threat in their classrooms?
