CYC 2000: RESEARCH PAPER ASSIGNMENT
RESEARCH PAPER PROPOSAL= 5%
RESEARCH PAPER= 25%
SELF-ASSESSMENT OF FEEDBACK INTEGRATION-5%
Due date: Oct. 22, 2020 at 11:59pm
(WEEK 7-VOUCHERS ACCEPTED)
This assignment will require you to write an academic paper that is in response to one of the topics listed below.
You are required to do a paper proposal and submit this inweek 3-PLEASE SEE THAT ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE FOR DETAILS
For this paper, you will choose an abuse-related topic that interests you from those provided below. Using peer-reviewed journal articles, you will research the topic and write a 5-7 page research paper (excluding title page and references) about this topic, addressing the subheadings/topics provided.
Your paper will need to include a clear thesis statement that is based on the reading/research you have done for the paper. You will state a position about your topic and then explain and back up your position through your paper.
It is easiest to write about a topic that actually has your interest/passion. The table below contains a broad list of topics that are covered at least in part throughout the course. Column 1 lists topics that are specific to the area of child abuse. Column 2 lists topics that might be connected to discussions of child abuse. You will need to narrow down to a more concise issue within these topics.
Your topic must include a focus on something from Column 1.
However, it might be helpful to combine a topic from Column 1 with a topic or two from Column 2 to come up with a more specific focus for your paper. For example: The Relationship between Poverty and Neglect or The Role of CYCs in promoting Resiliency in Survivors of Abuse or Gender and Sexual Abuse.
**You are NOT required to combine topics from both columns. They are listed to try and help you narrow down a topic for this assignment.
Often, when you begin the research process and follow leads, your topic develops further and more clearly as you do the initial search. The more specific, clear, and concise your thesis topic becomes, the better! If you would like to discuss your potential topic please send an email to make an appointment.
Topics for this assignment:
You must include a topic from Column 1
The Role of CYC
Socioeconomic Status, Poverty
Witnessing Domestic Violence
Marginalized youth (consider race, gender or sexuality)
Prevention of Child Abuse
Self-Care for professionals when working with child abuse
Indigenous Experience (on or off reserve)
Evidence based practices in treating child abuse
Trauma/Impacts of Trauma
EXPECTED FORMAT OF YOUR RESEARCH PAPER:
INTRODUCTION (.5-1 PAGE)
-start with a “hook” sentence that captures the reader’s attention.
-introduce the focus of the paper and end the section with the thesis statement.
BACKGROUND (1-1.5 PAGES)
-provide the reader with evidence about the topic i.e. stats, sources that reflect the position you are taking
-this section should encourage the reader to see the importance of the thesis statement and purpose of the paper.
3 MAIN HEADINGS (3-4 PAGES)
-each heading should be the name of the area that you are focusing on as opposed to “Heading #1” i.e. Substance abuse not Heading 1
-each heading should include a topic sentence that introduces what will be discussed in the section
-ensure that there is a tie back to the thesis statement before you end the section.
CONCLUSION (.5-1 page)
-concisely presented summary of information
-no new information in this section-it should all be discussed elsewhere in the paper
-tie back to your thesis statement and emphasize your points
-Do not use a computer reference generating program or OWL at PURDUE for this process
-it is simple to gain marks in this section of the rubric if you take the time to do this
-review with peers or the professor in advance of the due date
-APA 7th edition is required; this is in the library or available for purchase from numerous places. It is also the required text for every course in the program.
