Rose, E. (2010). Continuous Partial Attention: Reconsidering the Role of Online Learning in the Age of Interruption. Educational Technology, 50(4), 41-46. (WEB)
Initial Response (FPM2a 3%):
Rose (2010) addresses the concept of continuous partial attention in her article. Because it is almost ten years old, it does not fully encompass the Smartphone Revolution that took place in the early 2010s. However, the concepts and discussion certainly apply to our use of Smartphones – if not more so.
Your initial post asks you to discuss your experience of continuous partial attention (Rose, 2010), being sure not to confuse this with Multitasking. Provide two examples (using Smartphones specifically, which is the course focus) and then discuss how you feel this has affected you or your life. What is it like to live in a state of fragmented awareness (Turkle as cited in Rose, 2010, p. 3) and with what implications?
part 2 –
Give some feedback and some additional insight to a group member’s commentary about their experience of Smartphones, continuous partial attention, and the implications they discussed (Respond to your peers, not the instructor or TA posts).

gROUP MEMEBERS POST –
In reading this article I realized that this phenomenon of continuous partial attention is very much a part of my everyday life and has been for quite a few years. Over the years, as school has moved more and more online, I have found that this has become a more predominant issue in my life. Ever since I got my first smart phone at the age of 13, I have struggled with the issue of continuous partial attention, especially when trying to complete schoolwork. With classes being delivered exclusively online this year, I think I have been struggling to overcome the distractions offered by my smartphone more now than ever before. Even through the process of completing this assignment I had to battle the urge to stop reading or writing to check my phone for “just a quick second”. Just now as I am writing this, I stopped writing to check my phone and ended up getting distracted and the next thing I know a half hour has gone by. Another example of when I struggle with continuous partial attention is when I go onto my phone to do a simple task such as responding to a text, checking the weather, changing a song or opening up my internet browser to look something up. I will go onto my phone with the intention of doing one simple task and will end up getting distracted by a million different things, so much so that sometimes I end up forgetting what it even was that I went on my phone to do in the first place. I feel like partial attention has affected many parts of my life, ranging from my work and school life, to my social life. While I’m at work I’m constantly waiting to check my phone and see what my friends are up to or what I have missed. As the article says, I think the main reason for me always having the urge to check my phone is so that I can have the feeling of being connected and “in the loop”. My schoolwork and productivity have been similarly affected. I try to complete a simple task such as reading an article or writing a forum post and get distracted/interrupted by what is on my phone. This makes it so a task that would normally take 30 mins, ends up taking hours to complete. I often wish that I could turn off this urge to check my phone or that I wouldn’t be distracted so easily however, this will be an obstacle that I will have to work to overcome.
