Purpose, Content, Genre:
The Esoteric: You must write a proper Conference Paper with an Abstract. This Conference Paper can focus on any topic of your choice (with some restrictions), and must include a pre-emptive Abstract that summarizes your essay as well as a brief list of “Keywords” that relate to the content of your essay. This assignment is “research heavy” and requires a general thesis followed by an extensive process of academic research and discovery that will be corroborated by evidence from secondary sources such as academic papers published in academic journals, news articles, multi-modal sources such as films or television news and documentaries, interviews with experts in the field, as well as traditional sources such as books from the library or other credible and reputable sources, which you then list in your Works Cited/Bibliography page.

*Please note: There is not a “correct answer”; the purpose of this assignment is for you to demonstrate a proficiency for developing a large-scale writing project that is based on an extensive process driven by research, discovery, investigation and analysis. Your Conference Paper can be an extension/expansion of your Exposé /Exposition Paper, but this “connection” is not required.

The Practical: Choose a topic that has books and papers written about it so that you can legitimately research and write about using reputable sources and references. You can choose any topic, from the mundane to the comedic or controversial, just make sure the topic you choose will provide you with suitable material to effectively complete the task. The purpose of this assignment is for you to develop a large-scale writing project where you can either present an argument, make an attempt to inform and persuade others, rhetorically and/or critically review an issue, answer/address a research question, or make a case for something; this is how you will demonstrate a proficiency for the writing process at the academic level.

***You may NOT, however, write about the president or anything connected to COVID-19, the US 2020 Presidential Election, the Trump Administration, nor are you able to write about abortion, marijuana or guns – those topics are NOT allowed at any point during the semester!

Language:
This Conference Paper is an essay, and academic language is appropriate, and consistency is key. If you intend to include dialogue or quotes, please be sure to utilize the correct paragraph and sentence formatting and that your writing on the page conforms to Standard Written English. This includes an appropriate and accurate use of grammar, spelling and punctuation, and all references and in-text citations must follow the MLA guidelines. You are expected to use appropriate academic language and it is expected that you will write in the third person, (as opposed to the first- or second-person).

Six Specific Requirements for the Conference Paper:
I. Sources: at least two (2) of everything: at least 2 academic books, at least 2 academic journal articles, at least 2 news articles from proper news sources, at least 2 multi-modal sources, and so on. You need to compile a proper list of proper and legit sources you use to create content for your Conference Paper. These sources need to be properly cited according to the MLA, and listed properly according to the MLA format on the Works Cited/Bibliography page.

II. Abstract and Keywords: the Abstract is a brief 250-300-400 word summary of your Conference Paper; you must include your Abstract in your Conference Paper. You must also provide a brief list of Keywords relevant to your Conference Paper and Presentation.

III. Subheadings: subheadings are important for many reasons, which is why you need to include a least five of them in your Conference Paper.

IV. Length of Paper: 10 pages maximum, including Works Cited/Bibliography.

V. Exegetic Explanation: If your Conference Paper is connected in any way to your Exposé /Exposition Paper, you MUST include a two-page “Exegetic Explanation” that explains the difference between the two assignments and how one paper informed/influenced the other: this “Exegetic Explanation” must, in short, address a prompt similar to “What is the developmental difference between the Conference Paper and the Exposition Paper?”

VI. This Conference Paper, like all written assignments for this course, needs to be typed up and adorned with your name and date and other relevant information at the top of the assignment, as well as your name and page numbers on every page. Your Conference Paper needs to be typed in the 12 point font size and style of Times New Roman, and needs to be double-spaced.

Good work. The text generally succeeds in meeting its goals in terms of audience, purpose, and rhetorical skill without the need for further major revisions. The text may need some minor improvements in content, presentation, or writing style/mechanics.

Satisfactory work. The text is adequate in all respects, but requires some substantial revisions of content, presentation, or writing style/mechanics; it may require further work in more than one area. For instance, central ideas may generally be apparent, but may often lack adequate explanations, rhetorical analysis, or documentation necessary for different audiences and purposes.
D
Unsatisfactory work. The text generally requires extensive revisions of content, presentation, writing style, and/or mechanics. The writer has encountered significant problems meeting goals of audience, purpose, and acquiring command of rhetorical principles.
F
Failing work. The text does not have enough information, does something other than is appropriate for a given situation, or contains major and pervasive problems in terms of content, presentation, or writing style/mechanics that interfere with meaning. A failing grade is also assigned to plagiarized work.
